Thomas Hobbes (1632 – 1704) was an English philosopher. He is most famous today for his political philosophy, outlined in his book Leviathan. Hobbes also translated Thucydides’ History of the Peloponnesian War into English—he was reading and responding to the same Ancient authors that we are today, in F&C.

The two other editions to consider are done by Richard Tuck, for Cambridge ( Hobbes: Leviathan: Revised student edition (Cambridge Texts in the History of Political Thought)) and J. C. A. Gaskin, for Oxford ( Leviathan (Oxford World's Classics)). Of these three, only Tuck retains Hobbes' spelling, which, as mentioned above, is in some ways Leviathan Frontispiece of Thomas Hobbes’ Leviathan, by Abraham Bosse, with creative input from Thomas Hobbes, 1651 The famous frontispiece of Hobbes’s Leviathan was inspired by the anamorphic art form, which originated during the Renaissance and remained popular during Hobbes’s lifetime in the 17th century. The 17 th Century English philosopher Thomas Hobbes is now widely regarded as one of a handful of truly great political philosophers, whose masterwork Leviathan rivals in significance the political writings of Plato, Aristotle, Locke, Rousseau, Kant, and Rawls. In Leviathan, Hobbes describes the nature of a common-wealth—how a common-wealth is made and under what circumstances it is maintained or destroyed—and he also explains the “Christian common-wealth” and the “Kingdome of Darkness.” Hobbes begins with the basic thoughts of humankind. Hobbes’s most famous chapter in Leviathan is Chapter 13. Here he discusses the famous state of nature, laying the groundwork for future liberal philosophy for the next four centuries to come. Not only does he declare all men equal by nature (in the state of nature), he famously gives that grimly description of life in the state of nature.

Hobbes looms over all of us as the preeminent defender of the modern state and sovereign authority.

This book presents the most plausible reading of Thomas Hobbes's moral and political theory based on his book, Leviathan. Hobbes constructs a political theory

In Leviathan, Thomas Hobbes argues that the state of nature is the worst possible way in which people could live. Because there is no higher authority to protect and enforce rights, and no guarantee that anything we own will be permanently ours, people are constantly under Hobbes verzet zich hierbij onder meer tegen Aristoteles, die hij ook elders bekritiseert. Het gaat daarbij onder meer om Aristoteles' metafysica, maar de gelegenheid wordt ook te baat genomen om nogmaals aan te geven dat de staat de maatstaf van goed en kwaad is (hoofdstuk 46).
